A Gateway to Knowledge
Step into the Plow & Pew Democracy Center, a space created to bridge the past and the future through the power of knowledge. This unique center is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the African American experience while fostering a deeper understanding of democracy. As part of The Newberry Institute, the Center serves as a beacon of inspiration, where history and culture come alive for the benefit of the community.
Here, every visitor is invited to explore stories that illuminate the triumphs and challenges of the Black community throughout history. Whether you're a student, a scholar, or a curious mind, the Center offers a space to engage with materials that challenge perspectives, spark new ideas, and empower action.
Unmatched Collections and Archives
The Plow & Pew Democracy Center houses an extraordinary array of resources that cannot be found elsewhere in the region. With the largest collection of books on the African American experience in middle Georgia, it serves as a vital repository of cultural and historical knowledge. Rare piano rolls, out-of-print political journals, and the complete official records of the Civil War further enrich its offerings, making it a treasure trove for those eager to learn.
In addition to physical archives, the Center boasts over five terabytes of digital resources. This extensive collection includes photos, speeches, and documents related to democracy, all accessible to visitors. These materials are not just for research; they are tools for understanding and appreciating the complexities of history and the enduring relevance of democratic ideals.
