Plow & Pew Democracy Center Program

The Plow & Pew Democracy Center, nestled alongside Rosa’s Food Pantry in Hawkinsville, is more than a library or event space—it’s a living testament to the power of history, education, and community action. At its heart lies the Plow & Pew Reading Room, home to the largest collection of books on the African American experience in middle Georgia, rare political journals, Civil War records, and over 5 terabytes of digital archives featuring speeches, photos, and democracy-related documents. But this Center isn’t just about preserving the past; it’s about shaping the future.

From hosting scholars and activists in its event space to fostering lively debates on Annie Lee’s Porch—a cozy corner with sweeping views and a warm cup of coffee—the Center bridges history with modern civic engagement. It’s where farmers, faith leaders, students, and neighbors gather to learn, advocate, and build a democracy that works for everyone. Below are the ways TNI brings this mission to life in Hawkinsville.
