A Message from Dr. Julius Johnson, Founder and Chair of the Board
Kenya has held a special place in my heart since 1988, when I first visited as an undergraduate student at Saint Lawrence University. As part of a school program, I stepped onto Kenyan soil not knowing the profound impact this journey would have on my life. From that first visit, I was captivated by the warmth of the people, the rich culture, and the undeniable resilience that defines this incredible nation. Relationships I forged as a student have stood the test of time, evolving into lifelong bonds that continue to inspire me.
It fills me with immense pride to see The Newberry Institute extend its reach beyond the United States to establish its first international footprint here in Kenya. Since our founding in Hawkinsville, GA, in 2013, we have been committed to building resilient communities through purpose and partnership. Bringing that vision to Kenya feels like coming full circle—a chance to give back to a country that gave me so much.
The projects we’ve launched here are more than initiatives; they are a reflection of my passion and our organization’s unwavering commitment to creating lasting change. Whether through providing essential resources, fostering interfaith dialogue, or empowering local communities, our work is driven by the belief that sustainable impact begins with trust, collaboration, and respect for the communities we serve.
Every time I return to Kenya—whether for work or personal visits—I am reminded of the strength and potential of its people. I see mothers who dream of a brighter future for their children, young people brimming with innovative ideas, and communities eager to thrive despite the challenges they face. These moments fuel my determination to ensure The Newberry Institute’s efforts leave a tangible, meaningful legacy.
Our journey in Kenya is just beginning, and I am both humbled and honored to walk this path alongside the incredible people here. Together, we are creating opportunities, fostering hope, and building bridges that span continents. The work we do is a testament to what is possible when we unite with a shared purpose: to uplift communities, nurture potential, and drive transformative change.
Kenya is more than a destination for me—it’s a home. The Newberry Institute’s presence here is a promise to continue striving for a better tomorrow. And with your support, that promise will endure.
Thank you for joining us on this remarkable journey. Together, we are building resilient communities through partnership and purpose.
